Eligibility
Students with a science background can opt for a career in physiotherapy. To become a practicing physiotherapist or be employed as a professional in a hospital or clinic, one should have a B.Sc. degree or a diploma in physiotherapy. One could also go in for post-graduation.
Selection Process:
The admission to institutes is through common entrance examination for the course in Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT).
Duration of the Course:
degree courses in physiotherapy generally range from 3 to 4 years with internship period of 06 months at a hospital. Before taking admission in any college, care must be taken that the college or institute is recognised by the government. Diploma courses are normally from 3 months to 01 year.
The course is designed to give the students a basic understanding of the human body. The course contents include human anatomy, human physiology including bio-chemistry, pathology & pharmacology including bacteriology, Applied psychology including Psychiatry, principles of physio-therapy, mathematics & statistics, physiotherapy in medical and surgical conditions, biomechanics & kinesiology, medicine including neurology, surgery including orthopaedics, disability prevention & rehabilitation including prosthetics & orthotics ADL and physiotherapy clinics. A major part of the course work is practical in nature including an internship period where students work under the supervision of professionals at various hospitals and institutions.
Salary and Conditions:
On completion of the course a physiotherapist can start with a job of 6000 to 10000 depending upon the city and awareness in the city about physiotherapy. However after degree one can opt to go for the post graduation or gain experience before going for post graduation just to decide which specialisation to go for. Physios can also look for opportunities in western countries. One has to be careful about the employer and also the conditions of the contract. Stating salary is normally between 40000 to 60000 US dollars depending upon your experience and qualification. Pay is normally associated the time you work for (i.e. per hour or per ½ hour).
Various options after degree course are:-
- (a) Hospitals (best for gaining experience)
- (b) Clinic (one can open his/her own clinic (popularly known as pain clinics) after experience of 1/2 years)
- (c) Private practice (home visits- charges varies from Rs 200 to Rs 1000 depending upon the condition of the patient and experience of the physiotherapist)
